Just back from a long weekend in Riga with the parents. It was lovely! both in terms of seeing them again and of the city and the weather. Apart from on Friday, it was sunny the whole time, albeit windy, as we'd say in Scotland: the wind was "baltic" !
Almost no one spoke good English there which at the beginning I didn't fully understand but on learning about Riga and Latvia's history, it became clear! Latvia was occupied by the Soviets (and of course the Germans earlier) and only gained independence in 1991!! I should have tried speaking German, we'd definitely have gotten further...
There were so many Finns, Swedes and Danes in Riga too, I felt like I hadn't left the Nordic region! it's nice to be a bit of spy though. Thankfully the city was low on trashy British stag/hen parties :)
We even went to the seaside (a place called Jurmala) on Sunday, I love it, it feels so liberating to me to be by the ocean. Water is definitely my element.
Anyway have to make it short since I'm about to leave for Helsinki, we have our annual JPT seminar there tomorrow but are driving tonight, need time to prepare in the morning!
